Slutsky entered U Kiev in 1899 to study mathematics. However, after twice being involved in student unrest, he was expelled and completed his studies in Munich. In 1905 he returned to Kiev, this time to study political economics. In 1913 he joined the faculty of Kiev Institute of Commerce, moving to Moscow in 1926 to work in the government statistical offices. During his period there he worked on the theory of time series and stochastic processes. From 1938 he worked at the Institute of Mathematics at the USSR Academy of Sciences.
