A series of nuclear reactions in which hydrogen nuclei (protons) fuse to form a helium nucleus, with the associated release of nuclear energy. In stars with core temperatures below about 18 million K, hydrogen burning occurs primarily through the proton–proton reaction. In hotter stars, the carbon–nitrogen cycle is primarily responsible.
