单词 hydraulic geometry
释义
hydraulic geometry

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • A description of the adjustments made by a stream in response to changes in discharge, both at a cross-section and in the downstream direction. Adjustments are made in width, mean depth, mean velocity, slope, frictional resistance, suspended-sediment load, and water-surface gradient. The relationship between discharge and adjustment is expressed as a power function: y = aQb, where y is the adjusting variable, Q is discharge, and a and b are coefficients.

Geography
  • The study of the interrelationships along the course of a river. Discharge is linked to the mean channel width, the mean channel depth and slope, the suspended load, and the mean water velocity, and the wavelength of the meander is related to the radius of curvature; see Singh and Zhang (2007) Hydraul. Procs 22, 2. See also Smith and Pavelsky (2008) Water Resource Res. 44, W03427 on the estimation of hydraulic geometry from space.
