A conflict between France and China over Vietnam. China had assisted Vietnam in partial resistance to French expansion since the 1870s, first with irregular forces of the Black Flag Army and after 1883 with regular forces. In 1884, after both governments had rejected the compromise Li-Fournier agreement, war broke out. The Chinese were unable to resist the French navy, which attacked Taiwan and destroyed Fuzhou (Foochow) dockyard in south-east China, and the Qing dynasty’s reputation was weakened. In the treaty signed in 1885, France won control of Vietnam.
