A confederation of five Iroquoian Indian groups living north-east of Lake Huron. Known to themselves as Wyandot or Wendat (‘people of the peninsula’) and surviving today in Quebec and Oklahoma, they were named Huron (‘bristly-headed ruffian’) by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain when he first encountered them in 1615.
