A theoretical zone of sedimentation on the outer edge of a shore platform or, on the larger scale, of a continental shelf. The depth of its surface below sea level was thought to be determined by the wave base (the depth at which wave activity just fails to disturb sediment). Modern research has failed to show the existence of such terraces.
