Somewhere in space–time where general relativity theory predicts that certain quantities, such as the curvature of space–time, become infinite. For example, singularities are predicted to occur at the big bang and at the centre of a black hole. The existence of singularities is usually regarded as a limitation of general relativity theory. It has been suggested that singularities will not occur in a full theory of quantum gravity due to space–time being an emergent quantity in such a theory.
