known for his work with splines and wavelets. Silverman was educated at Cambridge U, gaining his BA in 1973 and his PhD (supervised by David Kendall) in 1977. In 1978 he joined the faculty at U Bath, moving to U Bristol in 1993. From 2003 to 2009 he was Master of St Peter’s College, Oxford. Silverman was awarded the Guy Medal in Bronze of the RSS in 1984 and the Guy Medal in Silver in 1995. He was the COPSS President’s Award winner in 1991 and was elected FRS in 1997. He was President of the IMS in 2001 and, briefly, of the RSS in 2010 before his appointment as Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Home Office.
