He first gained prominence for his work in organizing food production and distribution in the USA and Europe during and after World War I. As President he was faced with the long-term problems of the Depression which followed the stock market crash of 1929. He returned to relief work after World War II as coordinator of food supplies to avert the threat of postwar famine.
