A cloud of gas and dust that obscures the star Eta Carinae, with a shape thought by early observers to resemble a small human. Its dimensions are about 17″ × 12″. The material was ejected by the star in 1843 and is now expanding at about 500 km/s. The nebula hides the star from view, and reradiates much of the absorbed energy at infrared wavelengths.
