单词 wattmeter
释义
wattmeter

Physics
  • An instrument for measuring the power in watts in an alternating-current electric circuit. In a direct-current circuit, power is usually determined by separate measurements of the voltage and the current.

The electrodynamic wattmeter consists of two coils, one fixed (current) coil and one movable (potential) coil. The fixed coil carries the load current, and the movable coil carries a current proportional to the voltage applied to the measured circuit. The deflection of the needle attached to the movable coil indicates the power.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering
  • An instrument that measures electric power and is calibrated in watts, multiples of a watt, or submultiples of a watt. The most commonly used type of wattmeter is the electrodynamic wattmeter (see electrodynamometer). In circuits that have substantially constant currents and voltages an induction wattmeter (see induction instrument) may be used. For standardization and calibration purposes an electrostatic wattmeter is used. This consists of a quadrant electrometer that is arranged in a suitable circuit containing noninductive resistors so that it measures power directly.
