Having contracted tuberculosis as a pilot in the First World War, Hill collected a war-related disability pension for the next 75 years! Hill's first degree was in economics. In 1923 he began work for the National Institute for Medical Research as a statistician. In 1933 he moved to the LSHTM, becoming Professor of Medical Statistics in 1947. Together with Doll, he provided in 1952 the first statistical evidence linking smoking and lung cancer. He was President of the RSS in 1950, and was awarded its Guy Medal in Gold in 1953. The Society now awards a medal every three years in his honour. He was elected FRS in 1954 and was knighted in 1961.
