As premier he was largely responsible for the government’s mishandling of the Wilkes affair and also for the effort to raise revenue in America that resulted in the Stamp Act of 1765. George III came to dislike him and some of his fellow politicians objected to his authoritanism, although his budgets were well-received by backbenchers in Parliament. His failures led to his dismissal from office in 1765.
