A satellite that detects and pinpoints gamma-ray bursts in space. Launched in October 2000 from the Kawjalein facility, a military launch site on the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean, the mission is a collaboration between the USA, Japan, France, and Italy. HETE-2, was designed survey the X-ray sky for two years. It carries two X-ray detectors: an X-ray camera and a wide-field X-ray monitor. The craft is still in operation, but as of March 2017 its operational efficiency has decreased due to the advanced age of its NiCd batteries. The satellite has advanced our knowledge of gamma-ray bursts, including connecting a nearby gamma-ray burst with a supernova. Among other achievements, HETE-2 was also the first satellite to send out arcminute positions of a burst to the observation community within tens of seconds of the burst’s onset.
