An image dynamic range that is higher than the usual standards for photography and image displays. The dynamic range of an image format is the maximum ratio possible between the darkest and brightest parts of the image. The dynamic range of an image can be constrained by both the capabilities of the camera used to capture it and those of the display used to render it. There are techniques that use multiple images from low dynamic range cameras to produce a single high dynamic range image, and ongoing development to produce displays with increased dynamic range. Standards for ultra high-definition displays also specify high dynamic range. See also contrast ratio; histogram equalization.
