A spin-zero particle with a nonzero mass, predicted by Peter Higgs (1929– ) and others to exist in certain gauge theories, in particular in electroweak theory. The Higgs boson was discovered at the Large Hadron Collider in 2012. It has a mass of about 125 GeV. In the standard model there is only one Higgs boson, but in the minimal supersymmetric standard model it is predicted that there should be five Higgs bosons, two of which are electrically charged.
