Any television system using high-definition image resolution. Such systems have generally standardized around two formats, one having 720 lines with 1280 pixels per line, and the other 1080 lines with 1920 pixels per line. Originally developed for analogue transmission techniques, HDTV is now deployed using digital video broadcasting.
