A person or company holding shares in a company. The ultimate say over control of a company lies with its equity shareholders, who can change the management either by using their votes at company meetings, or by accepting a takeover bid. A majority shareholder is one who holds a majority of voting shares; a minority shareholder holds fewer than half the shares.
