A tenant who pays rent fixed as a share of crops produced rather than an agreed amount of money. This system is relatively common in backward regions and less developed countries. Sharecropping has the effect of sharing risk between landlord and tenant, but discourages tenants from investing in irrigation and other permanent improvements.
