A clash between unionized strikers and non-unionized miners in the USA. It occurred in Herrin, Illinois, where the employers had attempted to break a strike by importing non-union men. Striking miners forced these to stop working, promised them safe-conduct, marched them from the mine, and then opened fire, killing around 25 men. A grand jury returned 214 indictments for murder and related offences, but local feeling prevented convictions.
