A finch (family Fringillidae), about 18 cm long with a wingspan of 30 cm, light brown with a black circle around the eyes and bill, and a black throat, black wings with white, brown, and blue stripes, and a robust, conical bill. It feeds on hard seeds and occurs in forests and enters gardens throughout Europe, eastern Asia, and North Africa.
