单词 scoria
释义
scoria

Geology and Earth Sciences
  • Loose, rubbly, basaltic ejecta that accumulate around Strombolian eruptive volcanic vents, eventually building up as a scoria cone, whose height may range from a few tens of metres to up to 300 m, and whose slope is determined by the angle of repose of the loose material. The scoria clasts range widely in size, and have a light, frothy texture, being full of vesicles. They are mainly drab grey in colour, although when fresh they may be iridescent, but often the scoria oxidizes by reaction with steam escaping from the vent, when it becomes a deep reddish brown.

Geography
  • A volcanic rock made of sharp rock fragments and full of air pockets once occupied by gases. Scoria cones are constructed by the accumulation of ballistically ejected clasts from discrete, relatively coarse-grained Strombolian bursts, and subsequent avalanching (Valentine et al. (2005) Geology 33, 8).
