As Nazi chief-of-staff from 1938 he was responsible for the planning of the Blitzkrieg campaigns of World War II. He opposed Hitler’s decision to strike against Stalingrad in 1942, and was dismissed. After the July Plot to assassinate Hitler, he was sent to a concentration camp. He was freed in 1945.
