Hadamard was educated in Paris where, after graduating from the École Normale Supérieure in 1888, he obtained his doctorate in 1892. His wife was a relative of Alfred Dreyfus, who was convicted of selling military secrets to the Germans. It was subsequently discovered that the evidence against Dreyfus had been manufactured and Hadamard was instrumental in helping to clear his name. Hadamard's research spanned many areas of mathematics. He was elected a member of the NAS in 1926, FRS in 1932, and FRSE in 1946.
