King of Norway (1905–57). Formerly Prince Charles of Denmark, he was elected by the Norwegian Storting (parliament) to the throne in 1905. In April 1940 he was driven out by the German invasion. Refusing the suggestion of the government of Vidkun Quisling to abdicate, he continued the struggle from London. He returned to Norway in 1945. He dispensed with much of the regal pomp attached to the monarchy, and became known as the ‘people’s king’.
