A temporary increase in wind speed, lasting for a few seconds. A typical ratio of gust speed to wind speed in rural areas is 1.6: 1, increasing to 2: 1 in urban areas due to the effects of high buildings and narrow streets. See Mitsuta and Tsukamoto (1989) J.
