A black and white seabird related to the auks (family Alcidae) that nests on cliffs in large, densely packed colonies. There are two genera: Uria with two species (known as murres in North America) and Cepphus with three species. Guillemots occur in northern and sub-Arctic waters of the North Atlantic and North Pacific.
