Grumman's original LM design in 1962 weighed 11 250 kg, which was increased by additional equipment to 14 850 kg for the Moon landing in 1969. This work was done under the company's original name of the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation.

Grumman Aerospace of Bethpage, Long Island, New York, built instruments for NASA, such as the Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET). The company later merged with Northrop to become the Northrop Grumman Corporation. Its Logicon Division provides the base operations for the Kennedy Space Center, including engineering, logistics, and project management.
