A pair of galaxies in orbit around each other. True binary galaxies are very difficult to distinguish from chance superpositions of two galaxies in the line of sight. The statistical study of the orbits of binary pairs is valuable in trying to estimate the total masses of particular types of galaxy, although the extremely long orbital periods prevent the accurate determination of masses of individual galaxies.
