A team on the ground who give round-the-clock support to a space mission. Each member of a ground crew has a specific area of responsibility and duties. A space shuttle mission, for example, has separate ground crews for each of three phases of the flight. The launch support team of engineers and scientists at the Kennedy Space Center work with the Johnson Space Center's mission control centre to prepare the shuttle for its launch and to monitor its ascent to orbit. The three orbit support teams, each having about 50 engineers, scientists, and technicians, are in Building 30 at the Johnson Space Center and monitor the many systems and activities on board an orbiting spacecraft. The landing support team of technicians then receives the shuttle and its crew after landing.
