A mathematical statement proved primarily for use in the proof of a subsequent, more significant theorem. Exceptionally, there are some named results that are nonetheless referred to as lemmas: Gauss’ Lemma, Steinitz Exchange Lemma, Urysohn’s Lemma, and Zorn’s Lemma.
