A family of large US rockets, developed by German-born US rocket engineer Wernher von Braun for the Apollo project. The two-stage Saturn IB was used for launching Apollo spacecraft into orbit around the Earth. The three-stage Saturn V sent Apollo spacecraft to the Moon, and launched the Skylab space station. The take-off thrust of a Saturn V was 3.4 million kg. After Apollo and Skylab, the Saturn rockets were retired in favour of the space shuttle.
When it was built, the Saturn V was the largest operational launch vehicle ever produced. With its Apollo spacecraft payload it was over 111 m high.
