1. In field-effect transistors and thermionic valves, the current shown on the portion of the static characteristic where it is substantially constant and independent of voltage. Very little further increase of current with voltage occurs until breakdown is reached. The value of the saturation current is a function of the device only.

2. In bipolar junction transistors, the current flowing when both junctions are forward biased. This current is limited by the external circuit.
