An organic chemical compound that contains a chain of carbon atoms linked by single carbon-carbon bonds. Single covalent bonds also link the carbon atoms to hydrogen atoms (carbon-hydrogen). A carbon atom can form four bonds. The compound is saturated because all four of the carbon bonds are utilized, so that no other atoms can attach to the chain.
