Member of the carbonate group of minerals, with the formula BaCO3; sp. gr. 4.3; hardness 3.5; greyish-white; vitreous lustre; crystals tabular and twinned (see crystal twinning), but also massive and granular; occurs as a gangue mineral in hydrothermal-vein deposits (see hydrothermal mineral) associated with barite and galena.
