A dynasty that ruled the north-west Deccan of India, probably from the late 1st century bc until the 4th century ad. Its greatest king, Gautamiputra Satakarni (106–130 ad), consolidated his hold over the north-west Deccan, and extended his sway from coast to coast. Under his successors, Satavahana power gradually declined and had been entirely lost by the early 4th century.
