  • One of the allotropes of carbon and the most stable form of carbon under standard conditions. It is greyish-black, feels soft and greasy, and occurs naturally in rocks resulting from metamorphism of carbon-rich sediments. It is used as a lubricator, electrical conductor, the ‘lead’ in pencils, in steel-making, in brake linings, paints, etc.
