An edible caryopsis, which is a hard, dry fruit that does not split open (i.e. an achene) and in which the ovary wall is attached to the seed coat. Cereal grasses (e.g. wheat, barley, rye, rice, and maize) produce seeds of this type. Beans (family Fabaceae) that can be dried, e.g. soybeans (Glycine max), are also classed as grains.
