The movement of saline water into fresh water aquifers. It happens to a restricted extent in most coastal aquifers, because, due to its mineral content, salt water is denser than fresh water, and can push inland beneath the fresh water. Certain human activities have contributed to salt water intrusion, which has risen in many coastal areas, as a result of pumping ground water from coastal fresh water wells. Asfahani and Abou Zakhem (2012) Acta Geophysica, DOI: 10.2478/s11600-012-0071-3 review all aspects of this problem, from surveying to corrective action in the Khanasser Valley, Syria.
