A graduate of mathematics and sociology at Syracuse U, Goodman obtained his PhD at Princeton U (supervised by Tukey and Wilks) in 1950. His academic career was spent at U Chicago and UCB. He was the COPSS Fisher Lecturer in 1968. He was elected to membership of the AAAS in 1973 and the NAS in 1974. He was the IMS Rietz Lecturer in 1983 and was presented with the ASA Wilks Award in 1985.
