Astronomy
  • A NASA establishment at Greenbelt, Maryland, founded in 1959, which performs Earth and space science research and satellite tracking. Goddard has designed and built numerous scientific satellites, including members of the Explorer series, and controls several astronomy satellites, including the Hubble Space Telescope. It houses the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC). Goddard also manages Wallops Flight Facility, at Wallops Island, Virginia, which coordinates NASA’s sounding rocket and scientific balloon programmes.

  • A NASA field centre at Greenbelt, Maryland, responsible for the development and operation of uncrewed scientific satellites, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES). Goddard is also the home of the National Space Science Data Center, a repository of data collected by satellites.
