A tiny, long-bodied fly (order Diptera), closely related to the mosquito (family Culicidae), usually with aquatic larvae so seldom found far from water. Males often assemble in large swarms, especially at dusk, waiting to attract females for mating. Males do not bite, but females of some species feed on mammalian blood. There are many species, found worldwide.
