A NASA satellite launched in 1995 December to study the variability of X-ray sources. The Proportional Counter Array (PCA) observed individual sources at energies of 2–60 keV while the High Energy X-ray Timing Experiment (HEXTE) covered the range 15–250 keV. Another instrument, the All-Sky Monitor (ASM), scanned the whole sky every 90 min. RXTE operated until 2012 January. It was named after B. B. Rossi.
