A hard natural resin obtained from pine tree oil and the wastes from processing wood pulp. It may be colourless, yellow, brown, or black. It is used as a flotation agent, solder flux, sizing compound, and in lacquers and plasticizers. It is also used to provide ‘grip’ to violinists’ bows (when it may be called colophony) and dancers’ and boxers’ shoes.
