A venomous lizard (family Helodermatidae), up to about 35 cm long, that spends most of its time in a burrow or beneath a rock, feeds on smaller animals and eggs, and occurs in the south-western USA and Mexico, at one time especially in the basin of the Gila river, in New Mexico and Arizona. Its bite is extremely painful but not fatal to a healthy adult person.
