A process involving the burning of a finely ground sulphide-containing ore with air to produce sulphur dioxide, and used prior to smelting. The roasting process is also used to remove any chemically bound moisture and the ore is converted to an oxide. A fluidized bed is used for the roasting of pyrite ore.
