2. One of many species of birds of prey (family Accipitridae) that typically are lightly built, with a small head, a short bill, long, narrow wings, and a long tail. They comprise three subfamilies. Elaninae kites, found worldwide, often hover while searching for rodents. True kites form the Milvinae, such as the red kite (Milvus milvus) found throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. The Perninae includes the swallow-tailed kite (Elanoides forficatus) found in the Americas.
