A listing of all known variable stars and their types, published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. It first appeared in 1948. The fourth edition was published in three volumes in 1985–8. A fourth volume containing cross-identification tables appeared in 1990 and a fifth, dealing with extragalactic variable stars and supernovae, in 1995. Updated editions of the GCVS are now released electronically; the 2016 version contained a total of 51 853 variables. A companion listing of unconfirmed variables, the New Catalogue of Suspected Variable Stars (NSV), is also published by the same group, the most recent edition being in 1982 with 14 811 objects. A Supplement containing an additional 11 206 suspected variables appeared in 1998. These two catalogues of suspected variables have since been merged and are also now available electronically.
