King of the Visigoths. He commanded Theodosius’ Gothic allies and helped put down the Western usurper emperor Eugenius. On Theodosius’ death the Eastern and Western Roman empires were formally divided. Alaric revolted against the rule of Constantinople (now Istanbul) and moved with his people in search of homelands. He invaded Italy in 401. Twice defeated by Stilicho, the Roman general, he entered a treaty of alliance with him. After the execution of Stilicho by Emperor Honorius, Alaric repudiated the pact and ravaged Italy, laying siege to Rome three times. The city fell in 410. That same year he planned invasions of Sicily and Africa, but his fleet was destroyed by storms. He died at Cosenza.
