A constant that appears in the precise form of Kepler’s third law. Its value was calculated by C. F. Gauss, who found it to be 0.017 202 098 95. Subsequent measurements have given a slightly different value for k, but Gauss’s value was still used when calculating the astronomical unit until 2012, when the astronomical unit was redefined.
